Why is nature important for children's development?

In this blog post we outline the benefits of playing outdoors for children which include intellectual, social, emotional and physical benefits.

When children spend more time outside playing they benefit from intellectual, emotional, social and physical development. By being outside around nature means children will experience a free-flowing environment that stimulates all the senses.

It's important for children to learn about how our planet works so by experimenting, solving and questioning how nature works children will gain intelligence benefits. Nature gives children the chance to be as inquisitive as they want which helps to develop and expand their knowledge.

Some great outdoor activities include:

  • Building and digging with dirt, and watching worms in the soil
  • Jumping in puddles
  • Listening and naming birds/ other animals
  • Collecting seeds and learning how to plant them
  • Building things out of twigs and sticks

We all know that being outside is extremely healthy for our mental health so it's exactly the same for children. They're free to explore and make noise which forms self-expression which is often restricted indoors. Nature can enhance a sense of peace and brings out nurturing qualities in children.

When playing outside children get the chance to interact with other children, learn to share and problem solve. Being outside with lot's of space gives children the opportunity to create their own rules within the space they play in which can be non-existent inside.

The physical benefits of outdoor play are endless, the fresh air and sunshine can benefit the absorption of vitamin D which helps towards a strong immune system. Playing outside allows children to be more physically active which contributes to children's overall fitness.

Some outdoor activities which children can take part in include:

  • Climbing trees
  • Jumping in puddles
  • Running around
  • Hanging and swinging on monkey bar equipment

With children learning more about nature, it teaches them to respect nature and look after it and to understand the cycle of life which will in the long run contribute to a more green planet.
